Winter landscapes in Ottawa | The Rideau Falls

A winter picture of the Rideau Falls from that vantage point of Green Island in Ottawa, Ontario. This moment marked my first picture of 2014, and the “frostbite weather” outside was hovering around minus 23 degrees Celsius, but “it felt like” minus 34 degrees Celsius with the wind blowing a brisk 17 km/h – ah, my warm love for extreme photography at its best!

This picture places an emphasis on the ice formations using a High Dynamic Range (HDR) effect, which was created using a bracketed series of pictures taken simultaneously at seven different exposure levels. The Rideau River flows into the Ottawa River, and early in the spring the ice build-up in this location is broken up by the Rideau River Blasting Crew using dynamite to get things flowing. I love the great outdoors!
