Istanbul, Turkey | Blue Mosque & Sultanahemt Park, Snowfall

Flash blizzard in Istanbul, Turkey — Blue Mosque, Sultanahemt Park

Enjoying the ultra-spectacular sights and sounds of prayers resonating from the Blue Mosque and its minarets. And making this moment extra special for me was the opportunity to enjoy it from Sultanahmet Park under a relatively heavy and rare snowfall. Wintertime is indeed picturesque! This mosque was constructed between 1606 and 1616, and is located next to the equally impressive Aya Sofya.

An Airbus A330 being deiced

My first time observing the wings of a plane getting de-iced….I loved the moment, but after missing three connecting flights from the delay, and experiencing the same process at three different airports in a single trip, my camera eventually stopped coming out for these moments…LOL It’s good to laugh, and to recognize the extra wait was for the better good…

Ottawa Photographer | Ottawa Firefighters stand ready while they take control of a house fire on Rochester St

Ottawa Firefighters in Action

Ottawa Firefighters in Action

Early this morning I woke up to the sound of my telephone ringing, a putrid smell of smoke, and a lot of flashing red and white lights emanating from outside my living room window.   Once I realized what had been going on I dashed to my window to see what I could see – my neighbour’s house had caught on fire!   My adrenalin began pumping immediately, so I threw on my jacket and a pair of jeans, ran out the door, and asked the first police officer I saw if my neighbours were OK. I kept thinking to myself: I hope they made it out ok, I hope they had a fire alarm with good batteries to wake them up.  Once I learned that everyone was believed OK, I ran for my camera and began taking a few pictures of some amazing Ottawa firefighters working hard to control the fire literally outside my front door. This picture was published on CBC News Ottawa, and for more media details on the lives this fire impacted, click here.   Yet another reminder to always be ready with fresh batteries (for smoke alarms and camera bodies!)

St. Petersburg, Russia

Just a walk in the park with some amazing architecture all lit up! In fact, just about every building in St. Petersburg was lit up. I can only imagine the power bill…but no self respecting photographer would ever complain about it! LOL

Ottawa Travel Photographer | Museum of the Great Patriotic War in Moscow, Russia

Hall of Glory, Museum of the Great Patriotic War

The “Hall of Glory” featured in full state grander with thousands upon thousands of names etched into the circular wall. The names commemorate every Russian soldier who laid down their lives to hold back and eventually defeat the Nazi Germany advance. This room was just so large that my 16mm lens was perceptively incapable of photographing it – actually the scale of everything in Moscow is just off the charts in a really neat way. This picture was taken with me lying on my back and doing a crunchy. The lighting in this room was just so very nice too…it will surely be a museum room that I’ll always remember!

Ankara, Turkey – Sihhiye Metro Station

Completely alone – yet again – at the Sihhiye Metro Station in Ankara, Turkey. On my was to Ankara’s main bus terminal, AŞTİ, to board an early morning bus to Goreme, Turkey! I had just missed the first train of the day, but that’s OK because it was worth stopping for that morning fresh simit! LOL And for those wondering, yes, public transit in Turkey is well used – just not at fringe tourist traveling hours 🙂

Istanbul, Turkey – M1 LRT Subway Train

Completely alone and traveling aboard the M1 Istanbul LRT. This picture was taken somewhere between the Havalimani and Dunya Ticaret Merkezi metro stations. It wasn’t until I arrived at the Atatürk International Airport (last stop) that I also realized that I was actually traveling aboard the very last train of the day! LOL Destiny.

War Art – Museum of the Great Patriotic War

World War II depictions from “The Great Homeland War” between Nazi Germany and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. Quite honestly some of the most impressive war-history-art exhibits I have ever seen. My photographs really don’t give it justice, so I would definitely recommend this museum as a “must see in person”!

The Armorial Hall of the Winter Palace

This majestic room was just so incredibly beautiful that I had to take a few minutes to sit down and enjoy it. The architecture, afternoon sunshine and colour scheme was all so very nice and warm! Featured in this room is a bowl made from the mineral aventurine, which according to the Hermitage, was crafted by Yekaterinburg Lapidary Works in the 19th century.

Ottawa Travel Photographer | Комсомо́льская Metro Station in Moscow, Russia

Moscow, Russia – Комсомо́льская Metro Station

Pictured here is one part of the magnificent Komsomolskaya subway station (using the Latin alphabet, and Kомсомо́льская using the local Cyrillic spelling). I thought Moscow’s metro system was really efficient once I learnt how to navigate and decipher a few patterns in cyrillic text. Each subway station sported its own unique character and design, and in some cases the decor and lighting was quite opulent. Perhaps the coolest part of the system was just observing the enormity of everything – from the huge escalators that required at least a minute or two of descending into the ground, from the sheer volume of people using the system. A tourist could easily spend a few days just visiting and photographing everything there is to see in Moscow’s beautiful metro stations. This picture captured a very quick moment of calm quietness. Literally seconds later trains arrived on both sides of the platform and the place was elbow-to-elbow with people.
